Best View: Riverfront
We didn’t take the cruise along the riverfront, though I’m sure it has spectacular views. Instead, we walked down to the park area and along the boardwalk each evening to see the sunset. The water shimmered, almost still, and the rows and rows of fuzzy green trees reflected in its face. It’s all green and yellow and blue. On the best days, the air felt those colors were rising up out of the water and washing into each other in the breeze. (more…)
Do or Don’t: Montgomery
DO visit the Capitol area during a holiday weekend. The ease of getting around is worth the feeling of emptiness.
DON’T forego sites of civil rights activism because you’re uncomfortable. It’s just as important to face the tainted history of the country as it is to not repeat the same mistakes. (more…)
What to Eat: Montgomery
Southern food is primarily heavy, it just is. Montgomery is no exception, but at least the city is walkable enough that you can burn some of what you eat to and from the restaurant/dive. It’s a good place to indulge because without too much work you can strike a little balance.
With that in mind, here is a list of must-try foods in Montgomery:
BBQ: A given when you’re in the South. Get it at Dreamland or Sam’s BBQ.
Buttermilk Chess Pie: Light, fluffy, and borderline tasteless if done wrong. It’s sweet, but it is mostly creamy with a hint of vanilla. If you get this at the wrong place, you won’t like it, so give it at least a couple tries before you write it off completely. (more…)
